What are dental implants?

Missing or failing teeth can negatively impact your confidence and your daily life, including what you can eat, the way you look and even how you speak. Implants are a popular long-term solution that can restore your smile.

Dental implants are titanium posts fixed into the jawbone. The bone gradually fuses to the implant making it strong and secure, so it can function as a natural tooth. Implants are topped with a crown, matched to the shade, shape and size of your remaining teeth.

Types of dental implants

Dental implants are a long-term solution to replace one or more missing teeth. They can also be used to support a single crown, bridge or dentures.

The different types of implant solutions our Specialist Prosthodontist in Cowbridge may offer, depending on your individual needs, include:

  • Single or multiple implants
  • Implant supported dentures
  • Implant supported bridges

Implant supported bridges

For patients who have lost more than one tooth, an implant supported bridge offers a secure and permanent solution.

While a standard dental bridge can prevent most tooth-loss-related problems, an implant-supported bridge has several advantages. Traditional bridges rely on adjacent teeth for support, which need to be reshaped before the bridge is secured in place. Using implants to secure the bridge instead means that no healthy teeth need to be altered to replace a missing tooth.

Implants are first placed into the jawbone. Once they have fused with the bone, abutment posts are attached to the implant. After a further healing period, the bridge is placed on top of the implants, securing the solution in place.

The dental implant process

  • Free consultation

Your journey begins with a comprehensive digital scan performed by our experienced treatment coordinator. They will discuss your goals, our flexible payment plans and book your next appointment with your treating specialist.
  • Meet your specialist

Your specialist will take x-rays, digital impressions of your mouth and conduct a clinical assessment. These help to plan your treatment and tailor the implant to fit your mouth.
  • Bone grafting

If you don’t have enough bone to support the implant, you may need a bone graft. This is a procedure to increase the amount of bone in your jaw.
  • Placing the implant

Under local anaesthetic, your gum is lifted, a small hole is drilled in your jawbone and the dental implant is inserted. You’ll usually need to wait around 3 months before the implant can support teeth.
