At Cowbridge Dental Specialists we’re able to provide NHS orthodontic treatment to qualifying patients under the age of 18. Helping to ensure that the dental care that youngsters need to enjoy good oral health in the long-term is accessible.
If your child qualifies for NHS orthodontic treatment, their care will be provided by our specialist team and funded by the NHS.
While our NHS funding is limited to those under 18 only, we are pleased to offer self-funded private treatment to patients of all ages, with no assessment or waiting lists.

NHS waiting times
If you qualify for NHS treatment, we will advise you if there is a waiting list at our practice and do our best to give you a good idea of when you can expect to have your braces or aligners fitted. We also have a priority waiting list for those patients requiring urgent orthodontic treatment.
NHS orthodontic treatment options
NHS funding for orthodontic treatment for children under the age of 18 is directed at patients who require the treatment to improve their dental health, not just to improve the appearance of their teeth.
NHS orthodontic treatment isn't given to everyone but may be provided to children experiencing the following concerns.
- missing or impacted teeth
- significant crowding of teeth
- increased prominence of teeth
- abnormal bite causing trauma and/or functional problems
Cases are also assessed on aesthetic grounds. Those with a low aesthetic score are unlikely to qualify for orthodontic treatment under the NHS.
NHS waiting times
Our current waiting list for an NHS orthodontic assessment is 24 to 36 months, but with allowance for fast tracking urgent cases (2 to 6 months). Once you have been assessed and qualify for NHS treatment you will be able to start treatment as soon as needed.
